<image:caption>Nick Butler | Canada | 2024 | 101m Set in the Cloudy Falls residence, a run-down apartment complex in Niagara Falls that seems destined to be torn down, the film tells the story of a handful of its tenants, chosen randomly by the narrator, Rita, the building’s glib superintendent. They include Terry, an uptight, middle-aged gay man who grows enamoured of the erratic, young drifter squatting next door; Brigit, a spiritual debunker who exposes psychic frauds on her little-seen YouTube channel; Riley, a compulsive liar whose many tall tales are starting to catch up to her; and the collection of neighbours who surround them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Andrew Finlay Stewart | 2025 | 5m Index Poems is a film combining the music and poetry of Del Stephen with imagery shot on 16mm film while exploring the Niagara region. The poems come from Del Stephen’s INDEX POEMS, a collection of painstakingly found poetry compiled from the backs of various books over several months and reappropriated in a new light. These poems are intertwined with the found poetry of local urban and natural environments, evocative moments and compositions captured on high-contrast black and white film with the NAC’s Bolex camera.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wed 12 Nov - Tidal Surges: Experimental Shorts - RADIANTLY ALIVE</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachelle Wunderink | 2024 | 2m In Radiantly Alive, Wunderink creates a single experimental video collage that magnifies the repetitive, often overlooked aspects of child-rearing into a horrific vignette, reflecting the quiet yet unrelenting rhythm of caregiving. She manipulates a 1950s Purcell shampoo commercial, layering and abstracting the original material to evoke a haunting sense of vertigo. This effect mirrors the cyclical, sometimes overwhelming nature of motherhood, emphasizing the mental exhaustion inherent in the daily tasks of feeding, cleaning, and comforting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wed 12 Nov - Tidal Surges: Experimental Shorts - SOUTH BY SOUTHEAST</image:title>
<image:caption>Gianni Baha | 2025 | 5m South by Southeast is an edit of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 film "North by Northwest,” using only scenes with people of colour. The end result reveals how people of colour were limited to service roles that relied on stereotypes of the American South and Southeast, despite the opening card affirming that any characters’ similarity to actual persons is purely coincidental. People of colour’s presence - or lack of - is more noticeable with the vibrant technicolor, which works against it’s initial intention, highlighting background actors instead of the stars. As messengers and carriers constantly aiding the story, it begs the question, how far would the protagonist get on their own if these scenes were removed?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Grace Glowicki | Canada | 2025 | 84m A wily gravedigger (Grace Glowicki) falls for the one man who is attracted to her fetid funk (Ben Petrie), but when fate doth conspire, she takes drastic measures to preserve their love in this camp phantasmagoria. Glowicki, also in the festival with The Legacy of Cloudy Falls, zaps new life into a literary classic which stitches together twisted Lynchian horror, Looney Tunes zaniness, and the surreal eroticism of Kenneth Anger. With only four actors in the cast, co-writer Petrie, Leah Doz, and Lowen Morrow use layers of stage make-up and masses of gravity-defying wigs to portray an entire horde of townsfolk. Campy, outrageous, revolting, and surprisingly touching, Dead Lover is a fearless statement from one of Canada’s weirdest filmmaking duos. Dead Lover was shot on 16mm film over 16 days in Toronto. All of the sets were two black box stages that were redecorated for each scene. Cinematographer, Rhayne Vermette, is also in the festival with Agatha’s Almanac. Grace Glowicki is a Toronto-based actor and filmmaker. She has performed in multiple features and shorts, several with her frequent collaborator Ben Petrie including Her Friend Adam (16) and The Heirloom (24). Her directorial credits include the feature Tito (19). Dead Lover (25) is her latest film.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Simón Mesa Soto | Colombia | 2025 | 120m Once a promising man of letters in his native Medellín, Restrepo is painfully coming to terms with the fact that his writing — maybe even his personality — isn’t taking him anywhere as he gets older… and he's not aging gracefully. In comes young Yurlady (Rebeca Andrade), a shy but clearly gifted student from humble roots. Oscar finds respite in helping Yurlady cultivate her poetic streak. But his erratic ways and insistence on dragging her into the moody world of poets pitches everyone around him into turmoil. Director Simón Mesa Soto’s sophomore film is beautifully shot on Super 16mm, winning the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. A POET is equally hilarious, absurd, uncomfortable and sad - drawing you into the world of Oscar Restrepo, who is just trying to live a creative life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jafar Panahi | Iran | 2025 | 92m When a traveller with a distinctively squeaky prosthetic leg arrives at his auto-repair shop one night, Vahid is convinced that it’s the officer who tortured him in prison years ago. Although he was always blindfolded when it happened, he’d recognise the sound of that leg anywhere – and so, seizing the opportunity for revenge, Vahid abducts the man and transports him to the desert, intending to bury him alive. But before he can do the deed, Vahid’s conscience halts him: what if he’s kidnapped the wrong person? Over a frenzied 24 hours, he sets out to find other former prisoners who can verify the man’s identity, amassing an unlikely group of co-conspirators along the way, each of whom carries their own motivation for vengeance. Jafar Panahi is a renowned Iranian film director, screenwriter, and editor known for his humanistic and critical depictions of Iranian society. A leading figure of the Iranian New Wave, his career is defined by international acclaim and persistent conflict with government, which has banned, arrested, and imprisoned him for his work. Despite severe restrictions, he has continued making films that address sociopolitical issues in Iran.</image:caption>

Driven by a lifelong love of storytelling and cinema, Zak creates films that reflect his deep passion for narrative and emotion on screen. Inspired by the persistent voice that urged him to make his own movies, he describes following that impulse as the best decision he’s ever made.</image:caption>

This is one of many nuggets of wisdom 90-year-old Agatha Bock offers from her solitary slice of paradise in southern Manitoba. Her aging ailments are reflected in the sprawling maples and rustic buildings on her 54-acre family farm, which requires constant maintenance. Meanwhile, abundant crops, pickles and jellies signal optimistic preparations for the future. Efficiently cultivating a garden with heirloom seeds, methodical processes of sowing, harvesting and preserving by hand easily fill her days. <image:title>Sun 16 Nov - Mahagonny - Experimental filmmaker, anthropologist, painter, and musicologist Harry Smith’s final film was an epic four-screen projection titled Mahagonny. Smith worked on this cinematic transformation of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for over ten years and considered it his magnum opus. His friends have said that Smith was obsessed with the opera, playing it over and over in his room at the Chelsea Hotel. The film was shot from 1970 to 1972 and edited for the next eight years. The “program” of the film is meticulous, with a complex structure and order. The Weill opera is transformed into a numerological and symbolic system. Images in the film are divided into categories— portraits, animation, symbols and nature— to form the palindrome P.A.S.A.N.A.S.A.P.</image:title>

The short film is an invitation to slow down; to engage deeply with the present, to pause and gaze, and notice the tiny, beautiful details of the world, including the people among you, doing the same. <image:caption>Drayden DeCosta | Canada | 2025 | 74m In Drayden DeCosta’s debut feature, the first independent arthouse film made entirely on-location in Welland, Ontario: Dee and his best friend Ken waste another day; listening to the radio until it conks out, throwing rocks at the remnants of industry, being pestered by a stranger... Dee wanders through the place that he calls home, taking in his surroundings and contemplating life. Consumed by an ambient sadness, Dee bears witness to many strange sights, culminating in a chance encounter with another soul that is just as lost and lonesome as he is. ‘Scenes from a Place Where Rails and Water Meet’ is a bittersweet ode to life adrift; an engrossing slice of Niagara New-Wave that is at once, bleak and hopeful.</image:caption>
